What is Recertification of Your Credential?
Achieving certification from the HR Certification Institute is a long-term commitment to yourself, your career and the HR profession. Recertification is the process of renewing one’s certification. To maintain certification, you must be prepared to continue to learn, grow and increase your current knowledge. With recertification, you are demonstrating your commitment to staying current in the field of Human Resources. Recertification says you are building upon your knowledge, growing as a professional and increasing your experience daily. All certifications are valid for three years. Recertification is required every three years through demonstrated professional development (preferred method) or retaking the exam.
Recertification credits can be earned in the following categories:
• Continuing Education
• Instruction
• On-the-Job Experience
• Research/Publishing
• Leadership
• Professional Membership
Earning credit involves much more than attending conferences and workshops. Most certified HR professionals earn their recertification credits through the very activities that make them valuable members of their organizations and increase their HR knowledge, including:
• creating leadership development initiatives
• developing a diversity program
• implementing HR best practices
• participating in contract negotiations with union leaders
Recertification Application Process
All certifications are valid for three years. Recertification is required every three years to maintain your credential. There are two ways that you may recertify:

All certified HR professionals have an Online Profile in which to record recertification activities. We recommend recording your activities as you complete them. When you earn the required 60 hours, you may apply and pay online. We will not review your activities until we receive your application and payment.
How to Apply for Recertification
After completing a minimum of 60 HR-related recertification activities or continuing education programs, you may submit your application and payment for recertification.
Please note:
• All certified HR professionals have an Online Profile where you can record your recertification activities.
• We recommend recording your activities in your Online Profile as you complete them.
• We will not review your activities until we receive your application and payment.
• Your application must be submitted in English.
